Leading European variable data printing company, Rotomail, has increased its production capacity by upgrading its two KODAK VERSAMARK VL2200 Printing Systems to the VL4200 version. The upgrade has boosted the print speed from 75 to 125 metres per minute, and has allowed the company to broaden its range of applications to include color books, short runs of local and international newspapers, educational publications, reprints, colour manuals, plus TransPromo and direct marketing.

Rotomail boasts an impressive infrastructure – including seven KODAK VERSAMARK Printing Systems – that is capable of producing 68 million color A4 pages per month. The two VL4200s have already become Rotomail’s leading systems, and are particularly well suited to printing newspapers. The results rival traditional printing, with the added advantage of being more efficient and offering local production.

The VL4200s will also play a pivotal role in Rotomail’s large-scale, customized book production set-up, which can print 1,000 different books per hour. This  proprietary system is a direct response to the burgeoning trend for limited-run book production, which has been spurred by a number of online self-publishing tools. The company will be able to use its system to print micro-runs of books – and even single copies.

“Targeting this market on this scale can only be sustained using a top-end machine like the VL4200,” says Giovanni Antonuzzo, CEO of Rotomail. “It’s fast and reliable, and the quality is very consistent. You always know what you’re going to get with the VL4200 – there are no unwelcome surprises.”

The VL4200 Printing Systems come equipped with a range of productivity-boosting features, such as continuous ink replenishment during production, enabling jobs to run without interruption. “The system’s speed, coupled with the 600 dpi resolution, gives us  exactly what we need to offer a quality, cost-effective product to our customers,” adds Antonuzzo.

Although Rotomail is diversifying its applications and expanding into new markets, its core business remains direct mail and transactional printing. The company produces highly effective customized communications, thanks to the addition of offline and offline finishing provided by its VERSAMARK Printing Systems.

Rotomail has an international client base that includes major banking and insurance groups, as well as large tour operators. The company provides customised printing for all kinds of travel documentation for Costa Crociere, MSC, Aida Cruise and Hotelplan including tickets, vouchers, brochures, maps and even luggage tags.

Growth prospects

Rotomail’s continual investment in the latest technology has  helped ensure its growth by 15% in the last year – a trend the company anticipates will continue as it develops more digital printing applications for books and newspapers.

Antonuzzo considers Rotomail’s alliance with Kodak as the cornerstone of the company’s continued success: “Quite simply, there are no real alternatives to the KODAK VERSAMARK Printing Systems. Plus we enjoy a very positive and productive relationship with Kodak. From the outset there was a meeting of minds. They understood our needs and enabled us to develop solutions and applications very quickly. In Kodak we’ve got the perfect partner for sustained growth.”
