Crown Wins Two Awards For Design And Packaging At The 2009 International Spirits Challenge

Posted by Admin on November 13th, 2009

CROWN Speciality Packaging Europe, a business unit of Crown Holdings, Inc. (NYSE: CCK) (Crown) , was honored with two awards in the Design and Packaging category at the 2009 International Spirits Challenge. The company’s Gold Award was a result of innovative metal packaging designed for the Bruichladdich Distillery’s Islay Single Malt Scotch Whisky while its Commended award was received for a unique perforated tin created for Jack Daniel’s. CROWN Speciality Packaging produces and designs high-quality metal packaging for companies in the perfume, cosmetics, wine and spirits, non processed food, confectionery, DIY and industrial markets.

The ISC is an annual competition that awards spirits brand owners and their suppliers for high-quality products and innovative packaging. The awards are assigned through a rigorous judging process conducted by a panel of industry leaders including master blenders, master distillers, importers, distributors, buyers, journalists and authors.

“It’s an honor to be recognized by the ISC for our work in the wine and spirits industry,” said Martin Stenson, Marketing & Development Manager, CROWN Speciality Packaging Europe. “At Crown, we work closely with our customers to find the ideal metal packaging solutions for their specific needs.”

The metal packaging developed by Crown for the Bruichladdich Distillery, located on the Isle of Islay in Scotland, included a trio of decorated whisky containers featuring high-resolution imagery. The circular containers have contrasting tones of black, brown and blue matte and glossy varnishes that complement the product’s super premium quality and prestigious image. The three tins package Bruichladdich’s Wave, Rock and Peat malts, named after symbols of the distillery’s Scottish roots. CROWN Speciality Packaging’s high-quality printing capabilities helped Bruichladdich use its packaging as a canvas to express its brand’s identity and enhance visual impact.

Simon Coughlin, Operations Director, Bruichladdich Distillery said: “We are proud of the 2009 ISC award and the recognition that it brings. Crown’s dedication to servicing our needs, deep understanding of the market and strong product innovation allowed us to form a true partnership, bringing success to all involved.”

The stunning Jack Daniel’s tin features a complex design with a part perforated surface of 9,000 holes and a deep black color, creating a luxurious look for added shelf appeal. The perforated surface allows an inside glimpse of the iconic bottle without the need for a plastic window, which would reduce recycling rates. The lid fit is controlled by the use of special pips on the lid and body wall, which enables the outward curl lid to click onto the body. This feature provides for easy opening for consumers yet prevents the lid from opening throughout the supply chain for product protection.
