Protective Solution Decreases Damage and Increases Numbers

Pregis Protective Packaging Europe has developed an innovative solution for the safe and efficient transportation of parts used in the production of the Skoda Octavia Combi model. The new system has provided improved levels of protection while at the same time doubling the number of parts that can be carried each time.
Previously parts were delivered to Skoda’s factory in Mlada Boleslav in the Czech Republic, in a standard plastic box. However, the new parts were more fragile and because they had to be placed diagonally in the box and touching each other, there was a high risk of them being scratched or dented during transit. Placing additional protection within the box reduced the number of parts that could be carried.
The Pregis solution was to slightly raise the height of the box while retaining its existing footprint. The new box, a standard collapsible PP/PE box from Schoeller Arca Systems, measures 160x120x100cm compared to the previous box size of 160x120x75cm. The additional 30% volume gave scope for more effective and efficient positioning of the parts within the box.
Key to Pregis’s innovative solution is the cross positioning of the parts on two different levels. This has increased the number of parts in each box from 11 to 21. At the same time, the extra space has allowed room for an effective partitioning and cushioning system, using die-cutted 5 mm polypropylene from Cartonplast and converted cross-linked Trocellen foam.

The new system has significantly reduced the number of damaged parts delivered to the Skoda factory. Equally important, because the box can carry double the number of parts, this has halved the number of lorries needed for transportation, offering important environmental benefits in the reduction of carbon dioxide emissions. The increased number of parts per box has also saved space within the warehouse.
The new system for Skoda was developed by Pregis’s European Design Centre in Prague. Owing to tight deadlines, the Pregis solution was devised and completed within two weeks of the company receiving the brief from Skoda.
