* First live applications of unique alternative for in-mould labeling

Printers from across Europe flocked to the open house events to see first hand the new MOSS Digital Decorating System, an innovative new solution developed jointly by Xeikon, a division of Punch Graphix, and Italy-based MOSS, a leader in technologies for decorating containers and other articles. The Digital Decorating System enables printers to quickly and cost-effectively decorate round, conical, rectangular and square pails and containers, even in very short runs.

The interest in the new solution was huge, with more than 100 customers and prospects from across Europe attending the open house events, which were staged in November at the Xeikon Demo Centre in Lier, Belgium. Industry experts from Xeikon and Moss delivered in-depth presentations on the new technology, and compared the process with conventional pail and container labeling processes. Attendees also learned about the benefits of toner-based printing over screen and offset printing for these applications. Visitors then congregated in the demo centre to see the first live demonstration of the new solution using the Xeikon 3300 and 5500plus digital presses. Visitors witnessed top-quality, digitally printed and applied decoration that passed all the typical tests, including scratching, tape, water and more. At end of the event, each attendee received a pail with a group picture of everyone attending printed on it.

Frank Vanmeenen, Global Marketing Manager at Punch Graphix, comments: “The open house events proved a massive success. It highlights that print houses remain far sighted – they understand how investment in new cutting-edge technology can help them develop new business opportunities and generate additional revenue. It also means that they consider the solutions presented by Xeikon and its partners a serious option to invest in and do business with in the future.”

Integrated end-to-end production

“We’ve been working closely with MOSS for the past couple of years, so it was a very proud moment to demonstrate live the excellent quality of this breakthrough solution to our customers,” says Filip Weymans, Xeikon’s Business Development Manager Labels & Packaging.

“The solution lets printers decorate various-shaped pails and containers in two simple steps. First, one of the Xeikon web presses prints the exact number of transfers required for the decoration. Then the roll of printed transfers is fed into the MOSS Digital Decorating System, which perfectly applies transfers to pails or containers via heat transfer. The result is an opacity and image quality that’s superior to what direct offset printing can produce. And for applications that need extra durability, an in-line varnishing unit can be incorporated into the MOSS transfer machine.”

Ultimate flexibility

The MOSS Digital Decorating System comes in two models for ultimate flexibility. DIGICON is perfect for round and conical pails, while DIGIFLEX is ideal for rectangular and square containers. Both models deliver a perfect application of the pre-printed images on the plastic pails or containers, and are cost effective with runs as small as 500.

The intelligent MOSS Digital Decorating System eliminates the need to create complicated graphic jobs or prepare screens or plates, as well as the chemistry associated with these conventional methods. Machine set-up time is fast on the Xeikon presses, eliminating the long make-ready times required by traditional methods, and reducing the high fixed costs associated with conventional set-ups that make short runs unaffordable. With the Xeikon presses, the cost per image remains at the same cost-effective level regardless of the quality produced. The Digital Decorating System enables production at approximately 18 ppm with a round 10L pail, delivering the same output as a traditional direct offset printing press.
