Open Date Thermal Inkjet Printers on a Roll!

Schades UK, part of a market leading European company supplying till and calculator rolls, labels and office stationery, has taken delivery of six CleanCode EV I thermal inkjet (TIJ) printers supplied by Open Date Equipment.
Printing real time and date onto the almost 50 million rolls produced annually for retailers, banks, offices and food suppliers, they replace continuous inkjet (CIJ) printers.
Based in Ripley, Derbyshire, Schades UK found that the CIJ printers were not only costly to run but also caused production problems.
Steven Grainger, factory manager at Schades UK explains: “The cartridge technology used for the EV I thermal printers solved this problem and are quick and simple to change.”
The basic EV I is significantly less expensive to buy than CIJ printers and has much lower running costs than CIJ or DOD machines, says Open Date. However, four software options take this machine from a simple system to one that rivals much higher priced high resolution coders, meant for secondary carton coding, or as a viable alternative to small character DOD, CIJ and laser printers, says Open Date. The software is supplied on Data Flash Cards and can be easily installed in the field.
At Schades UK, the EV I inkjet printers are mounted onto six production lines each running at up to 100 rolls/minute, providing highly legible and fully formed characters with a print resolution of 300dpi.
“Each line produces 25,000 rolls/day, working a 16 hour shift so the printers need to be reliable and easy to maintain”, added Mr Grainger
CleanCode inkjet coders are ready to install straight from the box, systems include mounting brackets, a hand held controller with WYSIWYG display and tactile keypad for message entry, plus the print head module with an internal product sensor.
Compact in design, the units use Hewlett Packard TIJ technology. Ink is stored in 42cc cartridges and the print head is integral to the ink cartridge which means that when the cartridge is replaced, so is the print head. No make-up is required for the inks.
Virtually no maintenance is needed as the coder can be switched off when not in use and the cartridge stored. To start up again the cartridge is simply re-loaded.
The EV I is capable of printing a one line message in 12.5mm characters or two lines of text with 5.5mm high characters. Selecting the character size is done via the font key on the hand held controller. The standard message length is one line of 24 characters or 48 characters in two lines of 24.
Machines can operate independently or as a group. The basic CleanCode EV 1 is designed to be completely expandable yet priced to be competitive with the lowest cost coders being used in production today.
